South America Essential

13 days, including travel days
Buenos Aires and Rio are only a few hours apart by air but move to completely different rhythms. Between them lies Iguazú, where subtropical forest and immense volumes of water form a sharp contrast to both cities.
Four nights in Buenos Aires leave time for the historical introduction, Recoleta and Palermo while keeping one day more flexible. A tango evening, Tigre, a museum or a long lunch are all reasonable choices.

Two nights at Iguazú divide the journey between Buenos Aires and Rio. Both sides of the falls are included. On the Argentine side, walkways lead into the river system and among the cascades, while the Brazilian side opens the broad panoramic view. The days at the falls replace city streets with subtropical forest, river and water.

Four nights in Rio bring the journey to a close. Corcovado and Sugarloaf provide a clear sense of the city’s geography, and one day remains free for the beach, Jardim Botânico, Santa Teresa or something entirely different. Mountains, sea and everyday city life are as important to the picture of Rio as the famous sights.

In thirteen days, two of the continent’s major cities are linked by Iguazú’s subtropical rainforest and waterfalls. Buenos Aires, Iguazú and Rio provide three very different first impressions of South America.

Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires stands beside Río de la Plata and grew through its port, migration and a strong desire to be both Argentine and international. Its regular street grid is broken by monumental avenues, railways, parks and neighbourhoods shaped by different communities and economies.

Plaza de Mayo is the political and historical centre. Casa Rosada, the cathedral and Cabildo frame a square where revolution, state power and protest have played decisive roles. Avenida de Mayo continues towards Congress through a cityscape of domes, cafés and buildings from an era when Argentina wanted to display its place in the world.

Iguazú Falls

Iguazú Falls lie where the Iguazú River reaches a basalt plateau on the border between Argentina and Brazil. The river divides around islands, rocks and channels before plunging through an almost three-kilometre-wide series of falls. Flow, colour and the number of visible cascades vary with rainfall and river level.

The Argentine national park has several main circuits. Devil’s Throat is reached across the upper river, ending at the edge of the largest drop, where the view is often filled with mist. The Upper Circuit follows the top of the falls and shows how the water gathers before the precipice. The Lower Circuit runs through forest at a lower level and approaches several fronts and side falls more closely.

Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro’s drama comes from its geography. Granite mountains rise between the sea, bays and dense urban areas, forcing the city to grow in distinct pockets connected by tunnels, coastal roads and passages between the hills. The grand landscape is therefore never far from daily life: people jog around Lagoa, shop after work in Botafogo, play football on the beach and ride buses through tunnels that suddenly open towards the Atlantic.
