Peru Classic

18 days, including travel days
Peru Classic begins on the Pacific coast, continues through the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu and then climbs towards Cusco and Lake Titicaca. The Amazon comes last as a complete change of climate, from the thin air of the high plateau to warm rainforest.
Two nights in Lima allow time for both the historic centre and a first impression of the modern coastal city. The journey then flies to Cusco, but continues immediately by road down into the Sacred Valley. Three nights here give time for both the best-known Inca sites and the valley’s smaller roads, without trying to fit everything into a single day trip from Cusco.

From Ollantaytambo, the train follows the Urubamba River into increasingly green terrain towards Machu Picchu. After the visit, the journey returns to Cusco. Three nights there allow time for the city’s historical layers, markets and a freer day that also gives the body more time to adjust to the altitude.

The route then crosses the Altiplano towards Lake Titicaca. The high plateau is more austere and the light sharper, but after more than a week in the Andes the altitude is no longer the first challenge of the journey.

From Puno, the route continues towards Puerto Maldonado and the Tambopata region. Four nights at a lodge give three full days for rainforest excursions. Rivers, lakes and forest trails are explored at different times of day, with weather and recent wildlife observations helping determine which activities make the most sense.

Across eighteen days, coast, valley, high plateau and rainforest succeed one another with enough time in each environment. Four nights in the Amazon also allow you to experience the forest’s changes from early morning to evening without making the final section feel rushed.

Lima

Lima lies between the Pacific Ocean and the first foothills of the Andes in a coastal desert that receives almost no regular rain. The cold ocean current and humid air create garúa, the fine mist that characterises the cooler half of the year and gives the city a soft grey light. Despite the dry climate, rivers and sophisticated irrigation have made the area habitable for several thousand years.

Long before the Incas, major ceremonial and political centres existed in the Rímac valley. Huaca Pucllana stands in the middle of Miraflores with a massive pyramid of hand-made adobe bricks. Pachacámac south of the city was an important pilgrimage centre for several cultures and remained significant under the Inca Empire.

Sacred Valley

The Sacred Valley follows the Urubamba River northwest of Cusco through a landscape where farmland spreads across the valley floor and terraces climb high onto the mountainsides. The altitude is lower than Cusco, the climate milder and the soil more fertile. During Inca times this made the valley important for maize production, royal estates, temples, roads and control of the route towards the cloud forest.

Pisac lies at the eastern end of the valley. The modern village has a market and crafts, while the archaeological site stretches across the ridge above with terraces, homes, temples and burial areas. The views show how the complex controlled both the valley and routes towards the highlands.

Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu lies at around 2,430 metres above sea level on a mountain ridge above the deep valley of the Urubamba River. The location is dramatic but not accidental. Water, mountain peaks, the movement of the sun and routes through the landscape held both practical and religious meaning for the Incas. The city is therefore as much part of the geography as a construction placed upon it.

The complex was built during the fifteenth century and is associated with the ruler Pachacuti. It contains residences, terraces, water channels, ceremonial spaces and areas with differing levels of status and access. The masonry ranges from rougher construction to finely cut stone in the most important buildings.

Cusco

Cusco lies at around 3,400 metres above sea level in a valley where red roofs climb towards the surrounding mountains. During the Inca period it was the centre of Tawantinsuyu, the empire that extended across large parts of the Andes. Streets, temples, palaces and roads were organised around a city with political, administrative and religious functions.

After the Spanish conquest, many Inca buildings were demolished or transformed. At the same time, much of the street plan and the most impressive stone walls remained. Colonial churches and houses were built directly on top of them. This physical merging is Cusco’s strongest expression: two periods do not simply sit beside each other but literally carry one another’s weight.

Lake Titicaca and Puno

Lake Titicaca lies at more than 3,800 metres above sea level and is surrounded by a more open landscape than the valleys around Cusco. The light is crisp, the air dry and the horizon broad across the water and Altiplano.

From Puno, boats travel to communities where totora reeds, agriculture and textiles still play important roles. The floating Uros islands demonstrate a distinctive building tradition, while longer excursions can continue to Taquile or Amantaní. Visits are made with respect for the fact that the islands are homes and workplaces, not scenery. The altitude remains demanding, so the arrival day is kept quiet and longer boat days also call for a measured pace.

Amazon and Puerto Maldonado

Puerto Maldonado lies in the warm lowlands where rivers from the Andes spread into the Amazon basin. From the city, the journey continues by boat towards lodges in the Tambopata area, where oxbow lakes, terra firme forest and riverbanks create several habitats within a relatively compact region.

Four nights allow time for early boat trips, forest walks and observation from platforms or lakes. One of the days has fewer fixed elements and is shaped by what guides have seen and heard during the previous days. Monkeys, birds, caimans and many other species occur here, but no sightings can be guaranteed. Weather and water levels determine which activities are most suitable each day.

More information

  • Flights, accommodation, transfers and excursions according to the final quotation
  • Local guides and activities according to the personalised itinerary

  • Drinks, tips and personal expenses
  • Optional extras and activities not specified in the final quotation

  • Travellers who want to combine Peru’s Andean heartland with a substantial stay in the Amazon
  • Those with close to three weeks who want to add further regions without making the journey feel rushed

  • Travellers who want to avoid high altitude or frequent changes of climate
  • Those who prefer very few hotel changes and long stays in one place

The journey moves from the coast to high altitude and then down into tropical lowlands. The Sacred Valley comes before Cusco for better altitude acclimatisation. Flights from Juliaca to Puerto Maldonado may require a connection depending on the current schedule.

The final price depends on travel dates, departure point, flight availability, hotel standard, room type and number of travellers. International flights are included according to the itinerary and price level stated in the quotation. Exact inclusions and price are always confirmed in a non-binding quotation.

Cities and the Sacred Valley are combined with well-located hotels and smaller properties with local character. At Lake Titicaca, location and comfort at altitude are prioritised. In the Amazon, the journey ends at a nature lodge where meals and guided activities are normally included.

  • Route: flights, train, a longer road journey to Puno and onward flight towards the Amazon
  • Altitude: gradual progression from the Sacred Valley to Cusco and Titicaca
  • Amazon: four nights at a lodge with three full days for rainforest excursions

Four nights in the Amazon provide three full days in the rainforest. With a shorter stay, too much of the time would be spent travelling to and from the lodge.
