15 days, including travel days
Panama can be crossed in a few hours, but it would be a shame to do it too quickly. Between the two oceans lie rainforest, an ancient volcanic crater and the cool highlands of Chiriquí before the journey reaches the islands of
Bocas del Toro.
In
Panama City, two of the country’s central stories meet. One is the canal and the international trade that has shaped the economy. The other is found in Casco Antiguo, where churches, squares and restored houses recall the city’s older history. A first guided day provides both perspectives and leaves the evening free.
Just outside the capital, rainforest begins around
Gamboa and Soberanía. The soundscape is richer in the morning and a nature guide uses both sight and hearing to find birds and mammals. A boat excursion on Gatún Lake runs close to canal traffic but also into small bays where forest dominates.
The road west pauses in
El Valle de Antón, a town set inside a broad volcanic caldera. The climate is cooler and the pace slower. A walk, garden visit or time at the market can be chosen according to interests and weather.
In
Boquete, the highland climate becomes still clearer. Coffee farms cover green slopes and a farm visit follows the process from plant to finished cup. An additional day can be used for cloud forest, walking or a more active excursion.
Finally, the journey descends to the Caribbean and
Bocas del Toro. The islands work best by boat and without an overly rigid schedule. Mangroves, beaches and marine environments provide a few calmer days to finish the journey.
Elevation and water shape almost the entire route. The city, rainforest, Chiriquí’s cooler highlands and the Caribbean islands lie surprisingly close together, yet the travel days have completely different characters.
