14 days, including travel days
Ecuador looks small on the map, but changes in altitude transform the natural environment quickly. From
Quito’s Andean valley, the journey passes markets and volcanic landscapes, descends into the
Amazon and then continues far out into the Pacific to
the Galápagos.
Two nights in
Quito begin the journey in the highlands. The colonial centre lies at almost 2,900 metres, so the first day is deliberately simple, with plenty of time to acclimatise. The route then heads north towards Otavalo and smaller communities of the northern Andes.
From the highlands, the road descends east towards the
Amazon. Three nights at a lodge provide two full days for rainforest excursions. River, trails and evening activities are combined according to weather and lodge location, and guides respond more to what is happening in the forest than to a rigid timetable.
Five nights in
the Galápagos follow. This allows for a varied programme on and around the islands from a base on Santa Cruz, for example a marine excursion, a day on another island and time for the highlands or beach without every morning beginning with a new boat. National park permits, weather and boat routes determine exactly which places can be booked for the specific journey.
In fourteen days, the route crosses four very different environments: a colonial highland capital, Andean countryside, tropical rainforest and volcanic islands in the Pacific.
