Colombia Essential

13 days, including travel days
Colombia Essential begins at 2,600 metres in Bogotá, descends among the green slopes of the Coffee Region and ends behind Cartagena’s city walls in Caribbean warmth.
Three nights in Bogotá mean the capital is more than a stopover. La Candelaria, Museo del Oro and the view from Monserrate give a first introduction to the city. A second full day moves beyond the historic centre and can focus on food markets, art, modern neighbourhoods or an excursion north of the city.

The Coffee Region is the next change of environment. Roads become narrower, valleys greener and each day is more closely connected to the surrounding landscape. A farm visit explains how coffee is grown and processed, but there is also time for scenery, small towns and a day that does not have to revolve around coffee at all.

Four nights in Cartagena leave room for both the historic city and the Caribbean. The walled city and Getsemaní are introduced with a guide, but two full days have far fewer fixed elements. One can be spent at sea and the other almost entirely free. The heat is a good reason not to schedule sightseeing from morning until evening.

Over thirteen days, Bogotá, the Coffee Region and Cartagena reveal three very different sides of Colombia, with breathing room around the days that also include flights.

Bogotá

Bogotá lies at around 2,600 metres above sea level on the Altiplano Cundiboyacense, a broad plateau in the Eastern Andes. The city has spread far across the savannah, but the forested mountain slopes to the east still provide a clear edge and point of orientation. Monserrate is visible from much of the centre and serves as pilgrimage site, viewpoint and symbol.

La Candelaria is the historic core, with cobbled streets, courtyards, churches and houses from several periods. Plaza de Bolívar brings together the cathedral, congress, courts and city hall in a public space where Colombia’s political history remains present. A few blocks away the scale changes to smaller squares, student life and street art.

Coffee Region

Colombia’s coffee region extends across several departments and elevation zones in the Central and Western Andes. The steep landscape has shaped small farms where much of the work is still done by hand. Coffee grows alongside banana, citrus, avocado and shade trees and is connected to the towns by narrow roads and Willys jeeps.

The Coffee Cultural Landscape of Colombia is a World Heritage Site comprising six geographical areas and eighteen urban settlements. Its value lies in the relationship between cultivation, mountain terrain, family farming, architecture and social institutions. The entire tourist region is not a World Heritage Site, but several important areas form part of this living productive landscape.

Cartagena de Indias

Cartagena de Indias lies beside a protected Caribbean bay and became one of the Spanish colonial empire’s most important ports in the Americas. Gold, silver, goods, people and military interests passed through the city. The wealth created palaces and churches but also depended on extensive systems of slavery, coercion and defence.

The walled city contains several districts with different historical roles. San Pedro brings together the cathedral and major palaces. San Diego has smaller squares, residences and convents. Getsemaní, outside the original privileged core, developed as an artisans’ and workers’ district and became important during the independence movement.

Bogotá lies at high altitude while Cartagena is hot and humid at sea level. Two domestic flights are normally included, but otherwise there is plenty of time in each place.

The final price depends on travel dates, departure point, flight availability, hotel standard, room type and number of travellers. International flights are included according to the itinerary and price level stated in the quotation. Exact inclusions and price are always confirmed in a non-binding quotation.

Smaller, well-located hotels with local character are well suited to Bogotá and Cartagena. In the Coffee Region, a finca or hacienda in a green setting is prioritised, ideally with coffee cultivation nearby. The final quotation specifies hotel, room type and standard.
