Argentina Classic

17 days, including travel days
Four landscapes define Argentina Classic: Buenos Aires on the Río de la Plata, subtropical forest at Iguazú, Mendoza’s dry wine country and the glaciers of Patagonia.
Four nights in Buenos Aires provide a relaxed and substantial beginning. The guided introduction explores the historic neighbourhoods, but the time in between is just as important: a café, a bookshop, a long dinner or a neighbourhood that does not appear on the usual list. More than two days in Buenos Aires makes a real difference.

Iguazú is only a short flight away but lies in an entirely different climate. Here the focus is on the falls from both sides of the border and the surrounding subtropical forest. Mendoza comes next. Four nights allow time for several wine regions without concentrating every tasting into a single day. One day heads farther into the Andes, while another can be devoted to Valle de Uco with a long lunch among the vineyards.

The final flight goes south to El Calafate. One full day is devoted to Perito Moreno and another to Lago Argentino. The last full day can be used for an estancia, hiking or rest. In Patagonia, the extra day is valuable both because of the weather and because there are good reasons to leave a few hours completely unplanned.

Over seventeen days, the four regions become more than brief stops. There is time for late evenings in Buenos Aires, several wine areas around Mendoza and the flexibility demanded by Patagonia’s huge distances and changeable weather.

Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires stands beside Río de la Plata and grew through its port, migration and a strong desire to be both Argentine and international. Its regular street grid is broken by monumental avenues, railways, parks and neighbourhoods shaped by different communities and economies.

Plaza de Mayo is the political and historical centre. Casa Rosada, the cathedral and Cabildo frame a square where revolution, state power and protest have played decisive roles. Avenida de Mayo continues towards Congress through a cityscape of domes, cafés and buildings from an era when Argentina wanted to display its place in the world.

Iguazú Falls

Iguazú Falls lie where the Iguazú River reaches a basalt plateau on the border between Argentina and Brazil. The river divides around islands, rocks and channels before plunging through an almost three-kilometre-wide series of falls. Flow, colour and the number of visible cascades vary with rainfall and river level.

The Argentine national park has several main circuits. Devil’s Throat is reached across the upper river, ending at the edge of the largest drop, where the view is often filled with mist. The Upper Circuit follows the top of the falls and shows how the water gathers before the precipice. The Lower Circuit runs through forest at a lower level and approaches several fronts and side falls more closely.

Mendoza

Mendoza lies on the dry eastern side of the Andes. Without meltwater from the mountains, neither the city nor its vineyards could exist in their present form. A network of acequias carries water along streets and out across farmland. Trees provide shade, parks soften the heat and green neighbourhoods contrast sharply with the surrounding desert.

The city was rebuilt with broad streets and large squares after the earthquake of 1861. Plaza Independencia and four smaller plazas create space and meeting points in the centre. Parque General San Martín extends westwards with a lake, avenues and the road up towards Cerro de la Gloria.

El Calafate and Perito Moreno

El Calafate lies on the southern shore of Lago Argentino in Santa Cruz Province. The small settlement developed as a trading and service point for regional estancias and has become southern Patagonia’s main base for Los Glaciares National Park. The town is surrounded by dry steppe, but the lake and the Andes constantly draw the landscape westwards towards the ice field.

Four very different regions mean three domestic flights. Weather in Patagonia and current flight schedules may lead to small adjustments in the order when the journey is booked.

International flights are included according to the itinerary and price level stated in the quotation. Exact inclusions and price are always confirmed in a non-binding quotation.

In Buenos Aires, Iguazú and El Calafate, we use well-located hotels with good comfort. In Mendoza, accommodation can be either central in the city or closer to the vineyards, depending on whether restaurants and city life or the tranquillity of wine country takes priority. Exact hotels are specified in the quotation.
