Serra dos Órgãos

The park’s more than 200 kilometres of trails cover an unusually large elevation range. A good plan therefore begins not with a list of sights but with the right entrance and the right level of ambition.
Dedo de Deus is a technical climbing summit, while Pedra do Sino and the traverse are long, weather-exposed hikes. The lower areas offer shorter trails in dense forest.
With the right itinerary, the mountains become more than a dramatic backdrop to Rio de Janeiro and form a journey in their own right through one of the Atlantic Forest’s most important protected areas.

Three entrances, three different sides of the park
Teresópolis gives access to easier trails in the lower section and the long route towards Pedra do Sino. From Bonfim on the Petrópolis side begins the trail towards Castelos do Açu and the classic traverse. Guapimirim lies lower and has warmer forest environments and streams. Always check which entrance an activity actually starts from.

Dedo de Deus – icon and technical climbing summit
The 1,692-metre granite formation Dedo de Deus has become a symbol both of Rio de Janeiro state and Brazilian climbing. The summit is not reached by an ordinary hiking trail but through technical climbing. Its distinctive silhouette can instead be seen from Mirante do Soberbo and several roads and viewpoints in the region.
Combine Serra dos Órgãos with
Travessia Petrópolis–Teresópolis
The roughly 30-kilometre traverse crosses the park’s highlands and is normally planned for two or three days. The first climb towards Açu is long, the middle section includes steep and exposed passages, and the finish goes via Pedra do Sino towards Teresópolis. Fitness alone is not enough; route choice, weather knowledge and the right equipment are essential.

Pedra do Sino and Castelos do Açu
Pedra do Sino is the park’s highest summit and in clear weather gives broad views across mountains and lowlands. Castelos do Açu lies on the Petrópolis side amid open highland formations. Both objectives require long climbs. Camping and other overnight stays in the high areas must be booked in advance through the park’s current system.
Shorter trails in the Atlantic Forest
Not everyone needs to head for the high plateau. Lower visitor areas have shorter walks, forest, streams and viewpoints where both surface and gradient vary. This makes Serra dos Órgãos adaptable to different travellers, but 'short' does not automatically mean easy when stones are wet and trails steep.

A refuge for Atlantic Forest species
The national park protects an elevation gradient from warm forest to cooler mountain environments. ICMBio has recorded thousands of plant species and rich birdlife together with many threatened and endemic species. The experience lies in habitats, sounds and vegetation; larger animals are shy and should never be sold as guaranteed sightings.

Mist, cold and rapidly changing mountain weather
May to September is usually drier, but mist and rain can reduce visibility within minutes and temperatures fall quickly at altitude. Summer thunderstorms and heavy rain make exposed sections and waterways more dangerous. Follow park instructions, turn back in good time and carry rain protection, warm layers, a head torch and enough water.

Choosing the right base from Rio de Janeiro
Teresópolis is best for Pedra do Sino and several routes from the park’s main entrance. Petrópolis/Bonfim is the starting point for Açu and the traverse, while Guapimirim gives access to the lower section. We choose the base according to the hike and arrange transport when start and finish lie in different towns. Allow two or three nights for easier excursions and more time for multi-day hiking.
