The four-day itinerary is a well-balanced choice for travellers who want to prioritise jaguar safaris without making the trip unnecessarily long.

After the long journey to Porto Jofre, you have two complete days of morning and afternoon boat safaris. This gives more flexibility than the three-day programme and allows you to follow wildlife movements across several parts of the river system.

Accommodation is in the Porto Jofre area and selected according to availability, location and access to the boat-safari area. Jaguar Bay Lodge is the preferred option.

Day by day

Day 1

Cuiabá to Porto Jofre along the Transpantaneira

After collection at Cuiabá airport or your hotel, meet your English-speaking nature guide and begin the journey towards the Pantanal.

Travel through Poconé and continue along the Transpantaneira. The guide makes several stops to photograph and observe wildlife by the road, bridges and shallow wetlands.

Lunch is served at a lodge along the route. Continue to Porto Jofre and check in at Jaguar Bay Lodge or similar.

Dinner and overnight in the Porto Jofre area.

Day 2

First full day of jaguar safari

After breakfast, set out by boat on the rivers around Porto Jofre. Your guide and boat driver search riverbanks, sandbanks, side channels and dense vegetation for jaguars.

Giant otters, capybaras, caimans, howler monkeys and abundant birdlife are also found here. The route and search area are chosen according to recent sightings and local conditions.

Return to the lodge for lunch and a rest during the hottest part of the day, then continue the boat safari until dusk.

Day 3

Second full day on the rivers

Another full day is devoted to jaguar and giant-otter safaris. Two complete days on the water allow different parts of the river system to be explored and increase the chances of repeated or longer sightings.

The guide adapts the day to water levels, temperature and information about wildlife movements. In addition to jaguars, there is often a good chance of seeing family groups of giant otters, caimans along the banks and capybaras close to the water.

Lunch and a rest at the lodge are followed by an afternoon safari until sunset.

Dinner and a final overnight in Porto Jofre.

Day 4

Return to Cuiabá

After breakfast, check out and leave Porto Jofre.

The return follows the full length of the Transpantaneira. The guide stops when wildlife is spotted and time allows, making the homeward journey a final wildlife safari.

Lunch is served at a lodge along the way before continuing via Poconé to Cuiabá airport or your hotel.

Jaguar Bay Lodge or similar

Jaguar Bay Lodge or similar accommodation is in the Porto Jofre area, close to the rivers used for boat safaris. The final lodge is confirmed subject to availability, with location and access to the safari area given priority.

Accommodation is comfortable but nature-focused, normally with air conditioning, a private bathroom with hot water, restaurant and common areas for relaxing between boat trips.

Physical level

The trip is mostly easy physically, with the main wildlife viewing from motorboat and safari vehicle.

There is some getting in and out of boats and vehicles, as well as long road transfers between Cuiabá and Porto Jofre. Days often start early to make use of the best wildlife-viewing hours.

Good to know

The Pantanal is a natural environment where weather, water levels, road conditions and wildlife movements determine the daily programme. The guide may therefore change the order of activities or choose different river sections.

Jaguars and other wildlife roam freely and sightings can never be guaranteed. Porto Jofre is, however, one of the areas where the chances of seeing jaguars are normally highest during the dry season.

Jaguar Bay Lodge is the preferred option in Porto Jofre, but accommodation may be replaced by a lodge, hotel or flotel of similar standard and location.

The tour can be run as a group departure or privately. Private tours are normally booked for at least two travellers unless otherwise agreed.

What to bring

Lätta, luftiga och snabbtorkande kläder passar bäst i Pantanals varma klimat. Kläder i dämpade naturfärger är att föredra under safariturerna.
