Classic lodge safari combined with the jaguar area around Porto Jofre
In five days, experience both a classic lodge area along the Transpantaneira and Porto Jofre’s boat safaris for jaguars and giant otters.
The first two nights are at Pousada Piuval or similar, where the programme includes horse riding, an observation tower, wildlife drives, canoeing and night safari. The journey then continues south to Jaguar Bay Lodge or similar in Porto Jofre.
This is a good choice for travellers who want to see several sides of the Pantanal but cannot devote a full week to the region.
Day 1
After collection in Cuiabá, meet your English-speaking nature guide and travel via Poconé to the Transpantaneira.
The transfer doubles as a first wildlife safari, with stops for animals and landscapes along the way.
Check in at Pousada Piuval or similar and have lunch. After a rest, take an afternoon safari through the lodge’s natural surroundings.
Dinner and night safari.
Day 2
After breakfast, there is an opportunity for a gentle horse ride through the lodge grounds. Afterwards, visit an observation tower with wide views over the surrounding wetlands.
After lunch and a rest, continue with a wildlife drive in another part of the area.
Later, a canoe trip may be made when water levels allow. The return journey is often combined with a night safari.
Dinner and overnight.
Day 3
The day begins at approximately 05:00 with a dawn safari, when birdlife is intense and nocturnal animals may still be active.
After breakfast, take a boat trip in the lodge area. The exact route depends on water levels and local conditions.
Lunch, check-out and continue south along the Transpantaneira. This transfer also serves as a wildlife safari.
Check in at Jaguar Bay Lodge or similar in the Porto Jofre area, followed by dinner and overnight.
Day 4
After breakfast, set out by boat on the rivers around Porto Jofre for a full day focused on jaguars and giant otters.
Your guide and boat driver search riverbanks, sandbanks, vegetation and side channels. Alongside jaguars, you may see capybaras, caimans, monkeys and many bird species.
Lunch and a rest at the lodge are followed by another boat safari until sunset.
Dinner and overnight.
Day 5
After breakfast, take a final boat trip with another opportunity to look for jaguars, giant otters and other wildlife.
After lunch, leave Porto Jofre and begin the return journey along the Transpantaneira.
The guide stops when time and wildlife allow before continuing via Poconé to Cuiabá airport or your hotel.
Pousada Piuval or similar lies along the Transpantaneira, surrounded by open grassland, woodland, palm groves and seasonal wetlands. The area is well suited to land-based safari, nature trails, horse riding and birdwatching.
Accommodation normally has air conditioning, a private bathroom with hot water, a restaurant, common areas and hammocks. The final lodge is confirmed subject to availability.
Jaguar Bay Lodge or similar accommodation is in the Porto Jofre area, close to the rivers used for boat safaris. The final lodge is confirmed subject to availability, with location and access to the safari area given priority.
Accommodation is comfortable but nature-focused, normally with air conditioning, a private bathroom with hot water, a restaurant and common areas for relaxing between boat trips.
Mostly easy
The journey is mostly easy physically, with much of the wildlife viewing from boat or safari vehicle.
Short nature walks, horse riding, canoeing and early-morning activities may occur. Horse riding and more physical activities are normally optional and can be replaced with a gentler arrangement when conditions allow.
Activities are adapted to weather, water levels, road conditions and recent wildlife sightings. The order may therefore change without altering the overall experience.
Jaguars and other wildlife roam freely and sightings can never be guaranteed. Boat safaris take place in the Porto Jofre area, where the chances are normally highest during the dry season.
The stated lodges are preferred options and may be replaced by similar accommodation with comparable location, standard and access to activities.
All programmes can be booked as group departures or private tours. Private arrangements normally require at least two travellers.
