Barranco Alto suits travellers who want to get far from main roads and large groups. The days are shaped by the Rio Negro, open wetlands and work on a living fazenda.
Excursions are often long and carried out in small groups. Final planning is made locally according to season, weather and recent sightings.
Day 1
Travel deep into the southern Pantanal to Fazenda Barranco Alto. Access is adapted to the season and may be by four-wheel-drive vehicle, small aircraft or a combination specified in the proposal.
After arrival and lunch, receive an introduction to the fazenda and take a first nature excursion in the afternoon.
Dinner is served with the host family and other guests.
Day 2
Spend the morning on the Rio Negro, where the guide searches for giant otters, caimans, capybaras and birds along riverbanks and forest edges.
After lunch, continue with an open-vehicle safari and a walk in another habitat.
The excursion can continue into dusk for nocturnal wildlife observations.
Day 3
Horse riding is one of the best ways to reach parts of the fazenda beyond the roads. The pace is gentle and the route is adapted to participants.
In the afternoon, paddle a canoe, swim in the Rio Negro when conditions are safe or observe the fazenda’s cattle work.
The day combines nature experiences with insight into how people live and work in this remote landscape.
Day 4
The extra full day is used flexibly. The guide may return to an area with fresh tracks, plan a longer safari or concentrate on birds, photography or walking.
Barranco Alto’s many microhabitats mean that each part of the property can produce different encounters and lighting conditions.
Dinner and a final night at the fazenda.
Day 5
When logistics allow, take a short morning activity before departure.
Leave the fazenda after breakfast or lunch and continue according to SambaTravel’s itinerary.

Barranco Alto’s excursions are often longer than at other lodges and may last three to four hours. Heat, uneven ground and getting in and out of boats, canoes and safari vehicles are part of the experience.
Horse riding is optional. The programme can be adapted, but the remote setting is best suited to travellers with a reasonable level of general fitness.

Pantanals klimat är varmt under stora delar av året, men tidiga morgnar och vinterdagar kan vara svala. Klä er i lager och välj lätta plagg i dämpade färger för utflykterna.
Långbyxor, långärmat och stängda skor ger skydd mot sol, grenar och insekter. Kamera och kikare bör skyddas mot damm, regn och stänk under båt- och kanotturer.
