This programme shows the classic side of the Pantanal: open wetlands, patches of woodland, rich birdlife and a varied activity programme from a lodge along the Transpantaneira.

There is no separate Porto Jofre section, so jaguar safari is not the main focus. Instead, you have more time for horse riding, canoeing, walking, observation towers, land-based wildlife drives and excursions after dark.

It is a good introduction for first-time visitors and suits travellers looking for a more relaxed itinerary with shorter transfers.

Day by day

Day 1

Cuiabá to the Pantanal – wildlife drive and night safari

After collection at Cuiabá airport or your hotel, meet your English-speaking nature guide and travel via Poconé towards the Transpantaneira.

Several stops are made during the transfer to observe and photograph wildlife. Capybaras, caimans, jabiru storks, herons and birds of prey are often seen along the road.

Arrive at Pousada Piuval or similar, check in and have lunch. In the afternoon, take a first wildlife drive through the lodge’s natural surroundings.

After dinner, a night safari searches for nocturnal birds, caimans and mammals using a spotlight.

Day 2

Sunrise, nature trail, safari and canoeing

The day begins at approximately 05:00 with a dawn activity. The cooler morning hours are often excellent for birds and mammals.

After breakfast, walk a nature trail to an observation tower with open views over wetlands, woodland and grassland.

After lunch and a rest, continue with a wildlife drive along the Transpantaneira or on the lodge’s land.

Later, take a canoe trip when water levels allow. The return may be combined with a night safari.

Day 3

Horse riding and safari around the lodge

After an early activity and breakfast, there is an opportunity for a gentle horse ride through the lodge grounds. Pantanal horses are accustomed to the terrain and the ride is adapted to the group.

After lunch and a rest, another safari follows by vehicle or on foot depending on weather, water levels and recent wildlife sightings.

A return visit to the observation tower or another viewpoint may be included in the afternoon.

Day 4

Morning activity and return to Cuiabá

The final day starts with an early activity around the lodge. Depending on conditions, this may be a shorter boat trip, walk or wildlife drive.

After breakfast, another nature activity is possible if time allows.

Lunch at the lodge, check-out and return along the Transpantaneira to Cuiabá airport or your hotel.

Pousada Piuval or similar

Pousada Piuval or similar lies along the Transpantaneira, surrounded by open grassland, woodland, palm groves and seasonal wetlands. The area is well suited to land-based safari, nature trails, horse riding and birdwatching.

Accommodation normally has air conditioning, a private bathroom with hot water, a restaurant, common areas and hammocks. The final lodge is confirmed subject to availability.

Easy to moderate

Physical level

The programme consists of vehicle and boat safaris plus shorter walks. Horse riding and canoeing may be included but are undertaken at a relaxed pace and can normally be omitted.

Several days begin around 05:00. During the wet season or on uneven ground, trails can be muddy, and getting in and out of boats requires some mobility.

Good to know

The programme is affected by weather, water levels and wildlife movements. The lodge and guide may change the order of activities or replace a boat trip with a land-based activity when conditions require it.

Pousada Piuval is the preferred option but may be replaced by a lodge of similar standard and location along the Transpantaneira.

The tour can be booked as a group departure or privately. A private tour normally requires at least two travellers.

What to bring

Lätta, luftiga och snabbtorkande kläder passar bäst i Pantanals varma klimat. Kläder i dämpade naturfärger är att föredra under safariturerna.
