Ouro Preto

Ouro Preto spreads across the hills like an entire baroque stage. Church towers face one another across the valleys, cobbled streets disappear behind white façades and far below the roofs cluster against green mountain slopes.

Few historic cities have such a dramatic setting. Ouro Preto is built on several levels, and every walk alternates between the close detail of a portal or sculpture and broad views across the entire city. The hills slow the pace, but they are also the reason the churches, squares and houses form such a powerful whole.

The baroque is immediately present. Aleijadinho’s soapstone has soft movement despite the hardness of the material, while Mestre Ataíde’s paintings open church ceilings towards bright skies and musical figures. Pilar’s gilding, Rosário’s rounded form and the balanced façade of São Francisco give each visit its own character.

The story continues underground and on Praça Tiradentes. A mine visit shows where the wealth came from, while Museu da Inconfidência provides the political narrative of colonial resistance and national myth-making. Together they make the art easier to understand without diminishing its beauty.

Ouro Preto is most compelling when its different layers are allowed to meet over several days. Morning churches, an afternoon mine, dinner with food from Minas and an evening walk through Praça Tiradentes create a journey that feels both grand and intimate.

São Francisco de Assis and the high point of Brazilian baroque – Ouro Preto

São Francisco de Assis and the high point of Brazilian baroque

Igreja de São Francisco de Assis stands on a height where its façade can be seen from several parts of the centre. Rounded towers, portal and soapstone ornament create a building that feels both light and sculptural. Aleijadinho gave the church an expression unmistakably rooted in Minas Gerais.

Inside, the unity continues in Mestre Ataíde’s ceiling painting. The Virgin is surrounded by light, clouds and musical angels, painted so that the flat timber ceiling seems to open towards the sky. Architecture, sculpture and painting share the same rhythm. São Francisco is therefore more than an important monument: it is where Ouro Preto’s artistic achievement becomes clearest all at once.

Pilar and Rosário – two very different baroque worlds

Nossa Senhora do Pilar contains one of the city’s richest interiors. Gilding fills the altars and follows the movement of the walls, while the exterior is much more restrained. The contrast between façade and interior makes the entrance particularly striking.

Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Pretos stands in another part of the city and has a soft oval plan unlike Ouro Preto’s other churches. It was built by a Black religious brotherhood and carries traces of the African and Afro-Brazilian traditions that shaped Minas. Together the churches show how different groups created their own spaces, artworks and expressions within the same city.

The gold mines beneath the hills – Ouro Preto

The gold mines beneath the hills

Ouro Preto’s splendour began underground. In the mines, the relationship between rock, labour and baroque city becomes concrete. Tunnels disappear into dark stone, and guides explain how gold was extracted, washed and controlled before moving on to the crown, trade and the churches.

Mina da Passagem near Mariana provides a larger and easier-to-read mining experience, while smaller mines in Ouro Preto bring visitors closer to the cramped working environments that once sat beside everyday urban life. A well-guided visit connects geology, technology and labour conditions. Afterwards, the gilded churches carry a different meaning because the mountain and the work behind them have become tangible.

Praça Tiradentes and the Inconfidência Mineira

Praça Tiradentes is Ouro Preto’s main open space, framed by the former town hall and the old governors’ palace. At its centre stands Tiradentes, whose fate became closely linked to Brazil’s story of independence.

Museu da Inconfidência goes deeper than the heroic image. It presents the 1789 conspiracy, resentment over Portuguese taxation and the contradictions between ideas of liberty and a society built on slavery. The story gives the square a weight that is easy to miss if it is treated only as a route between churches.

A city climbing across the hills – Ouro Preto

A city climbing across the hills

Ouro Preto developed as several mining camps and small settlements gradually connected across hilly terrain. There is therefore no single straight main axis. Streets rise, fall and turn, while churches serve as orientation points at different elevations.

This form is exactly what makes walking here so rewarding. One lane reveals only a portal and a few windows. A block later, the entire valley opens with roofs, towers and green mountains. Some of the best views appear between the official viewpoints, when the city suddenly shows how all its parts fit together.

Student repúblicas, festivals and nightlife

Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto has given the city a large student population and an unusual continuity of use in its historic houses. Many students live in repúblicas, shared residences with their own names, traditions and stories passed between generations.

Student life is most visible during carnival and the winter festival, but also on an ordinary weekday evening. Bars, music and conversation fill houses and squares after the churches have closed. It makes Ouro Preto less solemn than photographs suggest. History is everywhere, but the city is still being used.

Minas Gerais on the plate – Ouro Preto

Minas Gerais on the plate

The food of Minas Gerais is hearty, craft-based and closely connected to the region’s farms and old travel routes. Feijão tropeiro, tutu de feijão, frango com quiabo, angu and couve arrive in pots and on large plates where several flavours meet in the same meal.

Queijo Minas, pão de queijo, goiabada, doce de leite and coffee follow the day from breakfast to dessert. After hours on cobbled hills, the food becomes a natural part of the place. It is rustic without being simple and carries the same sense of craft and tradition as the city’s churches.

Mariana, Congonhas and a wider journey through Minas

Mariana lies close to Ouro Preto and was the first vila in Minas Gerais – a colonial settlement with municipal rights – before becoming the state’s first city and episcopal seat. It has a quieter urban scale, a handsome central square and churches that deepen the story of the gold region without simply repeating Ouro Preto.

In Congonhas, Aleijadinho’s twelve soapstone prophets stand in front of Bom Jesus de Matosinhos, one of Brazil’s most powerful sculptural ensembles. With more time, the journey can continue to Tiradentes, São João del-Rei, Belo Horizonte and Inhotim. Ouro Preto then becomes the core of a larger story about colonial art, modern culture and the rolling interior of Minas.
