Maragogi
Read more about Maragogi Show less
Maragogi is best known for its natural pools, but the destination should be experienced from both sea and land. Galés provides snorkelling and swimming at the reefs. Antunes and Ponta de Mangue offer long beach days. Barra Grande changes at low tide, while São Bento reveals a more everyday coast shaped by fishing and food traditions.
Water colour and visibility depend on sun, wind, rain and tide. During drier periods and calm seas, conditions are often very good, but the excursion should always be planned from the tide table and booked with an authorised operator.
APA Costa dos Corais is not a backdrop but the framework for the entire experience. Boats follow designated routes, areas can have visitor limits and living coral must never be touched or stood on. These rules allow one of Brazil’s most visited reef coasts to continue offering the same powerful encounter with the sea.
Maragogi has a calmer evening rhythm than larger beach cities. Dinner, a walk along the waterfront and an early morning before the next low tide suit the place better than a major nightlife scene. This is a coastal stay where the sea sets the pace.

Galés, Taocas and the regulated natural pools
Galés lies several kilometres offshore and consists of broad shallow reef sections accessible around low tide. Catamarans and smaller boats leave at regulated times. Snorkelling takes place in permitted zones, and visibility depends on wind, rain and waves.

Taocas and Barra Grande are other official visiting areas with a somewhat different scale. Which trip works best depends on tide, quota and boat type. A smaller group with more time in the water can provide a calmer experience than a large catamaran, but the boat also needs to suit each traveller’s needs and ability to board.
Antunes, Barra Grande and Caminho de Moisés
Praia de Antunes has a broad, pale beach and shallow water across large areas when the sea is calm. Beach services are available in several sections, but the atmosphere changes from lively to much quieter along the same coastline.
At Barra Grande, Caminho de Moisés appears as a sand strip during especially low tides. The phenomenon attracts many visitors and should be experienced with respect for the tide, currents and residents’ access to the beach. As the water rises, the path quickly disappears again.
Combine Maragogi with
São Bento, bolo de goma and local coastal life
São Bento lies south of Maragogi’s centre and has a more everyday character. Fishing, small boats and family-run businesses shape the beachfront. The community is particularly known for bolo de goma, small ring-shaped biscuits made from cassava starch and coconut.

Production still takes place in small bakeries and homes. A stop here adds a local flavour to the journey and shows that Maragogi’s coast has an identity older than natural-pool tourism.
Burgalhau, Ponta de Mangue and quieter beach days
Burgalhau lies close to the centre but feels more open, with coconut palms and a broad beach. Ponta de Mangue is farther north and often has calmer water inside the reef.
These beaches suit days without a fixed excursion programme. A hotel or pousada with a good beachfront position can matter more than proximity to the centre, particularly for travellers who prioritise swimming and rest over nightlife.
APA Costa dos Corais and a living reef
Maragogi lies inside Área de Proteção Ambiental Costa dos Corais, which extends along the coasts of Alagoas and Pernambuco. The protected area includes coral reefs, seagrass beds, mangrove, beaches and habitats for many fish, turtles and other marine species.

Visitor rules vary between zones and can be updated. Authorised boats, limited groups and a prohibition on standing on living reef are central principles. A responsible excursion explains the environment and does not use fish feeding as a shortcut to draw more animals around visitors.
Japaratinga and Rota Ecológica to the south
Japaratinga lies immediately south of Maragogi and has several small beaches, cliffs and a quieter centre. Farther south begins Rota Ecológica with Porto de Pedras, Tatuamunha and São Miguel dos Milagres.
These places work better with their own overnight stays than as rushed day trips. A combination allows Maragogi’s natural pools to be followed by smaller pousadas, quieter evenings and more days close to the beach.

Fish, coconut and meals by the sea
The food is built around fish, prawns, lobster, octopus, coconut and cassava. Grilled fish with rice, beans, farofa and vinaigrette is an obvious coastal meal, while moqueca and seafood stews provide a fuller view of Alagoas cuisine.

Bolo de goma from São Bento is the clearest local speciality. Its crisp texture and coconut flavour make it both everyday food and a strong symbol of the municipality.
Tides, length of stay and the road between Recife and Maceió
Maragogi lies strategically between two major airports. Transfers can be arranged from both Recife and Maceió, and the destination combines naturally with Porto de Galinhas, Tamandaré, Maceió or Rota Ecológica.
Four nights are a good foundation. The natural-pool excursion can then be placed on the right day while the rest of the time is used for several beaches. Two nights leave far less room if low tide or weather does not suit the arrival day.
