Uakari Lodge – 5 days

SambaTravel’s recommended introduction to Mamirauá’s flooded forests

5 days / 4 nights Easy to moderate Floating bungalow with private bathroom

Uakari Lodge is one of Brazil’s most meaningful lodge experiences, not because of outward luxury but because nature, research and local responsibility are genuinely connected.

Four nights is our recommended starting point. There is time to experience the várzea forest from both boat and trail, meet people who live in the reserve and understand the work that has made Mamirauá an international reference.

Water level determines how each excursion is carried out. Forest walked on foot at low water may, a few months later, be explored quietly by paddle canoe between the tree crowns.

The lodge team meets you in Tefé and accompanies you to the port. Travel by speedboat along the Solimões and into Mamirauá’s waterways.

After check-in and lunch, make a first boat excursion or nature-trail walk according to water level. In the evening, learn about the reserve, the Mamirauá Institute and community-based tourism.

Forest, canoeing and nocturnal wildlife

Day 3

Mamirauá lakes and changing forest habitats

A new trail or water route gives a different perspective on the forest and its adaptation to the river cycle. The guide chooses the area according to season and current wildlife activity.

In the afternoon, travel towards Lago Mamirauá. Returning after sunset also becomes a chance to observe caimans and other nocturnal animals.

Accommodation and facilities

Uakari Lodge

4 nights · Floating on a lake inside the Mamirauá Reserve, with Tefé as the gateway

Uakari Lodge

Uakari Lodge is a small floating lodge that rises and falls with the reserve’s water level. Bungalows have private verandas, large screened openings for natural ventilation and en-suite bathrooms. Electricity is mainly solar-powered.

This is not a conventional resort hotel. Its strengths are the setting, local guiding, direct connection with research and community-based operating model.

Meals are served communally and rely heavily on regional ingredients. The common areas make it easy to talk with guides, researchers and other travellers between excursions.

Easy to moderate

Physical level

Excursions are mainly by boat and paddle canoe at high water and on forest trails at low water. Getting in and out of smaller boats requires some mobility.

Heat, humidity and early starts can be more demanding than the actual walking distances.

Good to know

Uakari Lodge is reached via Tefé, not by road from Manaus. The lodge team meets guests in Tefé and the boat journey to the reserve normally takes about ninety minutes.

Standard programmes use fixed arrival and departure days. Dates and transfers must be matched to current flight schedules and always reconfirmed.

Mamirauá is várzea forest. During high water, boats travel among the tree crowns in flooded forest; during low water, more walking trails open.

Programme order can change according to water level, weather, research activity and local conditions.

Wildlife moves freely in the reserve and sightings of particular species can never be guaranteed.

The lodge uses solar energy and natural ventilation. The accommodation is thoughtfully designed but simple, with environmental considerations taking priority.

The programme can be booked separately or combined with flights, hotels and other parts of a tailor-made journey. Exact inclusions and price are stated in SambaTravel’s proposal.

Casa da Mata can occasionally be added to the four-night stay but must be confirmed separately because capacity is limited.

What to bring

Lightweight, breathable and quick-drying clothing is best. Long sleeves and trousers protect from sun, vegetation and insects, while light but sturdy footwear is useful on trails during low water.

Water level determines how excursions are carried out. At high water many outings use boats or paddle canoes; at low water more forest trails are accessible. Cameras, binoculars and electronics should therefore always be protected from rain and spray.

  • Light T-shirts and long-sleeved shirts
  • Long trousers in quick-drying fabric
  • Comfortable walking or hiking shoes
  • Sandals or light shoes for the lodge
  • Swimwear
  • Sun hat or cap
  • Light rain jacket or poncho
  • Sun protection and unscented insect repellent
  • Personal medication and toiletries
  • Binoculars
  • Camera, spare batteries and waterproof protection for electronics
  • Small daypack
