M/Y Tucano – Voyage to the Heart of the Amazon – 7 days

Amazon Nature Tours’ most complete expedition far up the Rio Negro into UNESCO-protected wilderness

7 days / 6 nights Easy to moderate Maximum 18 guests / 9 outside cabins

Voyage to the Heart of the Amazon is Tucano’s signature expedition and one of the most ambitious regular nature cruises in the Brazilian Amazon.

For six nights, the small expedition yacht travels far up the Rio Negro and into the Central Amazon Conservation Complex, a vast UNESCO-protected area. Its size and shallow draft allow access to tributaries that larger cruise vessels cannot reach.

The journey is built around repeated small-group excursions, often at dawn and dusk, with guides responding to fresh tracks, calls, weather and water level.

Rio Jauaperi is the most remote named area on the route. On the return, the voyage visits the Meeting of the Waters before reaching Manaus.

A first introductory excursion by small expedition boat or on foot is made during the day, depending on route and water level.

Day 2

Small tributaries, kayaking and terra firme forest

Begin at dawn when wildlife is often most active, exploring quiet channels by expedition boat or kayak in small groups.

Later, walk in tall terra firme forest while the guide interprets the traces left by plants, insects, birds and mammals.

After dark, another outing may search for nocturnal species.

Day 3

Farther from settlements and other boats

Continue towards less visited parts of the Rio Negro, alternating excursions with observation from the open decks.

Depending on season, paddle through flooded forest, walk on beaches exposed only at low water or follow narrow waterways among tall trees. A remote household visit may be included when locally appropriate.

Day 4

Rio Jauaperi – one of the expedition’s most remote sections

Day 6

Final forest excursion and the Meeting of the Waters

A final pre-dawn outing offers another chance to experience the forest before the heat builds. After breakfast, make the voyage’s last longer forest excursion.

In the afternoon, approach the Meeting of the Waters, where dark Rio Negro water meets the lighter sediment-rich Amazon River.

After sunset, pass Manaus and anchor north of the city for a farewell dinner on board.

Accommodation and facilities

M/Y Tucano

6 nights · Expedition cruise starting and ending in Manaus

M/Y Tucano

M/Y Tucano is a small expedition yacht built to navigate far into smaller Rio Negro tributaries. Its classic wooden interior is inspired by nineteenth-century river steamers, while its technical and safety systems are modern.

The nine outside cabins have large windows, individual air conditioning and private bathrooms. Some have two side-by-side single beds, while others use bunks; the exact category is stated in SambaTravel’s proposal.

On board are an air-conditioned lounge and dining room, a broad bow balcony and a large shaded observation deck. The atmosphere is comfortable and personal, but the experience is designed around active nature exploration rather than luxury cruising.

Easy to moderate

Physical level

The expedition is activity-rich rather than physically extreme. Guests can choose among many excursions and may remain aboard when they prefer.

Forest trails are uneven and small-boat boarding requires normal mobility. Heat and humidity add to the effort.

Good to know

M/Y Tucano operates scheduled departures. Embarkation, meeting point and times must always be checked against the current booking confirmation.

The vessel’s course and excursion order are adapted to water level, weather, safety and current natural conditions. An expedition therefore does not follow exactly the same route every week.

Most days offer several excursions by expedition boat, kayak or on foot. It is normally possible to skip an activity and remain on board.

Wildlife moves freely through a very large and dense rainforest. Sightings of any particular species can never be guaranteed.

The programme can be booked separately or combined with flights, a Manaus hotel and other parts of a tailor-made journey. Exact inclusions and price are stated in SambaTravel’s proposal.

What to bring

Light, informal clothes are suitable on board. Long trousers, socks and closed shoes with good grip are recommended for forest walks and shore visits.

Excursions often use small boats or kayaks. Rain, spray and high humidity occur year-round, so cameras and electronics should be kept in waterproof bags.

  • Light T-shirts, shorts and comfortable clothes for life on board
  • Long-sleeved shirt and long trousers for forest walks
  • Closed shoes with good grip and spare socks
  • Sandals or light shoes for the vessel
  • Swimwear and quick-drying towel
  • Sun hat or cap
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses
  • Effective insect repellent
  • Light rain jacket or poncho
  • Personal medication and toiletries
  • Binoculars
