M/Y Tucano – Into the Wild Amazon – 5 days

An intensive small-scale expedition through the Rio Negro, Anavilhanas and the meeting with the Amazon River

5 days / 4 nights Easy to moderate Maximum 18 guests / 9 outside cabins

Into the Wild Amazon uses five days unusually well. The vessel leaves Manaus in the afternoon, and the following days alternate between early boat outings, forest walks, kayaking, talks and time to rest on board.

The route covers both the Rio Negro and the Amazon River, moving through blackwater channels, flooded forest, tall terra firme forest and more open wetlands.

M/Y Tucano carries a maximum of 18 guests and excursion groups are smaller still, allowing guides to work closely with calls, tracks and subtle movement in the vegetation.

The shorter voyage does not penetrate as far into the wilderness as the six-night programme, but still offers a serious and varied Amazon experience.

Day 2

Anavilhanas – channels, forest and night life

Begin early by expedition boat or, if you prefer, on a guided kayak outing. Move quietly through narrow channels in search of birds, monkeys, sloths and other wildlife.

Later, walk in terra firme forest, with guiding focused on ecological relationships, tracks and sounds as much as individual species.

After dark, another boat excursion may search for caimans, frogs, night birds and other nocturnal wildlife.

Day 3

Different Rio Negro forest habitats

Another early outing compares open water, denser flooded forest and tall terra firme forest. The exact area is chosen according to water level and wildlife activity.

Kayaking, piranha fishing or a visit to a small riverside household may also be included when route and weather allow.

In the evening, the vessel begins moving downstream towards the larger rivers.

Accommodation and facilities

M/Y Tucano

4 nights · Expedition cruise starting and ending in Manaus

M/Y Tucano

M/Y Tucano is a small expedition yacht built to navigate far into smaller Rio Negro tributaries. Its classic wooden interior is inspired by nineteenth-century river steamers, while its technical and safety systems are modern.

The nine outside cabins have large windows, individual air conditioning and private bathrooms. Some have two side-by-side single beds, while others use bunks; the exact category is stated in SambaTravel’s proposal.

On board are an air-conditioned lounge and dining room, a broad bow balcony and a large shaded observation deck. The atmosphere is comfortable and personal, but the experience is designed around active nature exploration rather than luxury cruising.

Easy to moderate

Physical level

The cruise offers many activities but participation is flexible. Excursions involve getting in and out of small boats, walking uneven forest trails and sometimes kayaking.

Heat and humidity can be more demanding than the distances themselves. Tell SambaTravel about mobility limitations before booking.

Good to know

M/Y Tucano operates scheduled departures. Embarkation, meeting point and times must always be checked against the current booking confirmation.

The vessel’s course and excursion order are adapted to water level, weather, safety and current natural conditions. An expedition therefore does not follow exactly the same route every week.

Most days offer several excursions by expedition boat, kayak or on foot. It is normally possible to skip an activity and remain on board.

Wildlife moves freely through a very large and dense rainforest. Sightings of any particular species can never be guaranteed.

The programme can be booked separately or combined with flights, a Manaus hotel and other parts of a tailor-made journey. Exact inclusions and price are stated in SambaTravel’s proposal.
