Cristalino is an unusually strong location for nature photography: two high towers, river landscapes, dense forest, drier sierras and rich biodiversity within one reserve.
The photography programme is run with a private guide, individually or for your own small party. Days are planned around subjects, light, equipment and photographic goals rather than a standard activity schedule.
Six nights allow time to return to a tower or habitat, wait for better light and work with subjects ranging from birds and primates to landscapes, butterflies, fungi and macro details.

Day 1
Arrival, equipment and photographic planning
After the transfer from Alta Floresta, reach the lodge by boat. The journey provides the first opportunities for river landscapes and birds along the banks.
At the lodge, review equipment, priority subjects and how the coming days can be divided between towers, forest, river and higher terrain with your private guide.

Day 2
Morning light from the observation tower
Leave the lodge before sunrise to be in position as first light reaches the canopy. The tower provides open sightlines for birds, primates and broad landscapes.
Use the afternoon for another type of subject, such as forest edges or a trail where light filters through the vegetation.
Focus on the lower forest layers, where butterflies, insects, fungi, plants and discreet birds require a slower working style. Light remains low even during the day, and the guide helps find subjects that are easily overlooked.
After a rest, continue in a more open area or beside the river as the afternoon light softens.
The river makes it possible to work at longer distances with birds and primates in edge vegetation. The boat can stop when subject and light are right, while a canoe offers a lower, quieter position when conditions allow.
The day may also include landscape images, reflections and details in flooded forest during the high-water season.
An excursion towards higher terrain opens opportunities for wide-angle landscapes and subjects in vegetation that is drier than beside the river. The walk is planned with the weight of camera equipment and the photographer’s working capacity in mind.
In the afternoon, the guide selects a location where sunset or side light may offer new opportunities.
The final full day is deliberately flexible. Return to the location that has offered the strongest potential or search for a subject still missing from the photographic material.
This may mean another tower visit, river photography, a particular forest trail or more macro work. The guide adapts pace and positioning to the photographer’s needs.
When transfer timing allows, there is time for one last short photography session near the lodge or from the boat.
Then continue by boat and road to Alta Floresta airport.

Good to know
The day-by-day programme shows one possible arrangement. The guide selects trails and activities according to season, weather, water level, wildlife movements and guests’ interests.
Wildlife moves freely in dense rainforest. Sightings can never be guaranteed, and the guide’s experience is an important part of the stay.
The dry season normally runs from June to November and the greener, wetter period from December to May. Both seasons have distinct advantages.
Regular nature activities are conducted in small groups. A private guide can be booked at a supplement, subject to availability.
For safety reasons, children under 14 may not climb the observation towers. The lodge arranges alternative activities for families.
The programme can be booked on its own or combined with flights, hotels and other parts of a tailor-made journey. Exact inclusions and price are stated in SambaTravel’s proposal.
The lodge recommends five to seven nights for serious photography. Six nights provides a good balance between depth and the overall length of the journey.
The forest understory has little light. Fast lenses, a telephoto lens from around 300 mm, flash for selected subjects and a wide-angle lens for landscapes can be useful.
Drones may only be used with specific permission from the lodge. Permission must be arranged before travel.

What to bring
Lightweight, quick-drying clothing in muted natural colours is best for excursions. Long sleeves, long trousers and high socks provide protection in the forest, while swimwear is useful for anyone wishing to swim in the river.
Evenings can feel surprisingly cool, especially in the dry season, so bring a light warm layer. Cameras and binoculars should be protected against rain and humidity during boat trips.
