Cristalino Lodge – 6 days

In-depth nature stay with more time for the reserve’s variety

6 days / 5 nights Easy to moderate About 40 minutes by road followed by boat along the Teles Pires and Rio Cristalino

Five nights give Cristalino the time it deserves. You can experience more environments without forcing every activity into a compressed schedule.

The extra day is valuable in dense rainforest, where wildlife does not appear on demand. The guide can return to an active area, choose a longer trail or adapt the day to the weather.

The programme suits travellers who want to combine ambitious mornings in the reserve with time for the lodge’s restaurant, river terrace and peaceful setting.

Day by day

Day 1

Alta Floresta to Cristalino Lodge

The lodge team meets you at Alta Floresta airport. After about 40 minutes by road, continue by boat along the Teles Pires and into the Rio Cristalino.

On arrival, check in, have a meal and receive an introduction to the reserve. When arrival time allows, a first activity takes place nearby.

Dinner and overnight at Cristalino Lodge.

Day 2

Sunrise above the canopy

The day may begin before sunrise with a visit to one of the two 50-metre observation towers. As light spreads across the forest, birds and monkeys become visible in a layer that is difficult to experience from the ground.

Later, take a guided walk through terra firme forest. The pace is adapted to the group and to discoveries along the way, from giant trees and lianas to subtle bird calls and signs of mammals.

After lunch and a rest, take the day’s second excursion.

Day 3

Rio Cristalino by boat and canoe

A boat trip reveals the reserve from the water, where the forest is reflected in the dark river. When conditions suit, part of the route can be paddled by canoe for a quieter approach close to the bank.

Birds and monkeys are regularly seen along the river. Tapirs and giant otters occur in the area, but all encounters with wild animals happen on nature’s terms.

The second activity may use another trail or viewpoint and is chosen according to season and interest.

Day 4

Sierras and the forest mosaic

A walk towards higher ground shows how quickly the vegetation can change. The drier habitats on the sierras offer different landscapes, plants and birds from the forest beside the river.

Later, look for wildlife by boat or return to a tower as the light changes towards sunset.

Day 5

A day shaped by the latest signs from the forest

The extra full day is used where it makes the greatest difference. The guide may suggest a longer trail, a particular vegetation type, a new river section or a return to an area with interesting recent sightings.

You can also choose a gentler pace and make one of the day’s activities shorter. Cristalino works equally well for focused nature days and a combination of exploration and recovery.

Day 6

Farewell to the Rio Cristalino

After breakfast and any final activity, leave the lodge by boat. The return along the rivers is followed by road transfer to Alta Floresta airport.

Accommodation and facilities

Cristalino Lodge

5 nights · On the Rio Cristalino in the southern Amazon, reached via Alta Floresta

Cristalino Lodge

Cristalino Lodge is an exclusive ecolodge combining expert nature experiences with understated, carefully designed comfort. Buildings are spread through the forest and designed to make use of natural light, ventilation and close contact with the surroundings.

Accommodation comes in five main categories: Standard Room, Superior Suite, Junior Bungalow, Bungalow and Special Bungalow. The larger categories offer more privacy, air conditioning, private gardens and outdoor showers; the Special Bungalow also has a secluded outdoor bath. The exact category is stated in SambaTravel’s proposal.

Between excursions there is a restaurant, bar, reading room, floating deck and other shared areas beside the river. The lodge operates with a clear focus on energy efficiency, water treatment and long-term forest conservation.

Good to know

The day-by-day programme shows one possible arrangement. The guide selects trails and activities according to season, weather, water level, wildlife movements and guests’ interests.

Wildlife moves freely in dense rainforest. Sightings can never be guaranteed, and the guide’s experience is an important part of the stay.

The dry season normally runs from June to November and the greener, wetter period from December to May. Both seasons have distinct advantages.

Regular nature activities are conducted in small groups. A private guide can be booked at a supplement, subject to availability.

For safety reasons, children under 14 may not climb the observation towers. The lodge arranges alternative activities for families.

The programme can be booked on its own or combined with flights, hotels and other parts of a tailor-made journey. Exact inclusions and price are stated in SambaTravel’s proposal.

The extra night has the greatest value for nature-focused travellers who want to follow weather and wildlife rather than tick off a fixed schedule.

What to bring

Lightweight, quick-drying clothing in muted natural colours is best for excursions. Long sleeves, long trousers and high socks provide protection in the forest, while swimwear is useful for anyone wishing to swim in the river.

Evenings can feel surprisingly cool, especially in the dry season, so bring a light warm layer. Cameras and binoculars should be protected against rain and humidity during boat trips.

  • Light T-shirts and long-sleeved technical tops
  • Comfortable long trousers in neutral colours
  • Long socks for forest walks
  • Sturdy and comfortable walking shoes
  • Shorts and swimwear for canoeing and river swimming
  • Sun hat or cap
  • Light rain jacket or anorak
  • A thin warm layer for cooler evenings
  • Sunscreen and unscented insect repellent
  • Personal medication and toiletries
  • Binoculars
  • Camera, spare batteries and moisture protection for electronics
