Cristalino Lodge – 5 days

Our recommended minimum for a complete Cristalino experience

5 days / 4 nights Easy to moderate About 40 minutes by road followed by boat along the Teles Pires and Rio Cristalino

Cristalino Lodge is one of SambaTravel’s genuine highlights – a place where the quality of the lodge and guiding enhances the forest rather than competing with it.

Four nights is the length we normally recommend as a starting point. It gives three full days to explore the reserve at different levels: river, forest floor, higher ground and canopy from the two observation towers.

Each day is planned by the guide according to season, wildlife and guests’ interests. That makes the programme less predictable on paper, but better in the field.

Day by day

Day 1

Alta Floresta to Cristalino Lodge

The lodge team meets you at Alta Floresta airport. After about 40 minutes by road, continue by boat along the Teles Pires and into the Rio Cristalino.

On arrival, check in, have a meal and receive an introduction to the reserve. When arrival time allows, a first activity takes place nearby.

Dinner and overnight at Cristalino Lodge.

Day 2

Sunrise above the canopy

The day may begin before sunrise with a visit to one of the two 50-metre observation towers. As light spreads across the forest, birds and monkeys become visible in a layer that is difficult to experience from the ground.

Later, take a guided walk through terra firme forest. The pace is adapted to the group and to discoveries along the way, from giant trees and lianas to subtle bird calls and signs of mammals.

After lunch and a rest, take the day’s second excursion.

Day 3

Rio Cristalino by boat and canoe

A boat trip reveals the reserve from the water, where the forest is reflected in the dark river. When conditions suit, part of the route can be paddled by canoe for a quieter approach close to the bank.

Birds and monkeys are regularly seen along the river. Tapirs and giant otters occur in the area, but all encounters with wild animals happen on nature’s terms.

The second activity may use another trail or viewpoint and is chosen according to season and interest.

Day 4

Sierras, changing vegetation and a new viewpoint

Cristalino lies in an unusually varied transition zone. A walk may climb towards the higher sierras, where vegetation and views differ clearly from the wetter forest beside the river.

During the day’s second activity, return to an observation tower, choose a new trail or follow the river in softer afternoon light.

The guide prioritises variety and places where wildlife has been most active in recent days.

Day 5

Final morning and return to Alta Floresta

Depending on transfer and flight time, a final short nature activity may be possible after breakfast.

Leave the lodge by boat and continue by road to Alta Floresta airport.

Accommodation and facilities

Cristalino Lodge

4 nights · On the Rio Cristalino in the southern Amazon, reached via Alta Floresta

Cristalino Lodge

Cristalino Lodge is an exclusive ecolodge combining expert nature experiences with understated, carefully designed comfort. Buildings are spread through the forest and designed to make use of natural light, ventilation and close contact with the surroundings.

Accommodation comes in five main categories: Standard Room, Superior Suite, Junior Bungalow, Bungalow and Special Bungalow. The larger categories offer more privacy, air conditioning, private gardens and outdoor showers; the Special Bungalow also has a secluded outdoor bath. The exact category is stated in SambaTravel’s proposal.

Between excursions there is a restaurant, bar, reading room, floating deck and other shared areas beside the river. The lodge operates with a clear focus on energy efficiency, water treatment and long-term forest conservation.

Good to know

The day-by-day programme shows one possible arrangement. The guide selects trails and activities according to season, weather, water level, wildlife movements and guests’ interests.

Wildlife moves freely in dense rainforest. Sightings can never be guaranteed, and the guide’s experience is an important part of the stay.

The dry season normally runs from June to November and the greener, wetter period from December to May. Both seasons have distinct advantages.

Regular nature activities are conducted in small groups. A private guide can be booked at a supplement, subject to availability.

For safety reasons, children under 14 may not climb the observation towers. The lodge arranges alternative activities for families.

The programme can be booked on its own or combined with flights, hotels and other parts of a tailor-made journey. Exact inclusions and price are stated in SambaTravel’s proposal.

Five days / four nights is the length SambaTravel normally recommends for first-time visitors on a longer Brazil journey.

What to bring

Lightweight, quick-drying clothing in muted natural colours is best for excursions. Long sleeves, long trousers and high socks provide protection in the forest, while swimwear is useful for anyone wishing to swim in the river.

Evenings can feel surprisingly cool, especially in the dry season, so bring a light warm layer. Cameras and binoculars should be protected against rain and humidity during boat trips.

  • Light T-shirts and long-sleeved technical tops
  • Comfortable long trousers in neutral colours
  • Long socks for forest walks
  • Sturdy and comfortable walking shoes
  • Shorts and swimwear for canoeing and river swimming
  • Sun hat or cap
  • Light rain jacket or anorak
  • A thin warm layer for cooler evenings
  • Sunscreen and unscented insect repellent
  • Personal medication and toiletries
  • Binoculars
  • Camera, spare batteries and moisture protection for electronics
