Lodge programme

Amazon Turtle Lodge – Buriti, 5 days

A varied lodge programme with river excursions, rainforest walks and encounters with life along Amazon tributaries

5 days / 4 nights Easy to moderate Lodge, river outings and lighter rainforest activities

Buriti is a well-balanced five-day programme for travellers who want to experience several sides of the Amazon while staying at a lodge throughout.

The journey begins in Manaus and passes the port market and the Meeting of the Waters, where the Rio Negro and Solimões run side by side, before continuing towards the Mamori area and Amazon Turtle Lodge.

Days alternate between motorised canoe excursions, paddling, sunrise outings, rainforest walks and fishing. A visit to a riverside family also gives insight into manioc and rubber production and the way everyday life is adapted to the rivers and forest.

Day by day

Day 1

From Manaus to Amazon Turtle Lodge

You are collected from your Manaus hotel in the morning and taken to the CEASA port area. After a short visit to the local fish and fruit market, cross the Meeting of the Waters by speedboat, where the dark Rio Negro runs alongside the lighter Solimões.

Continue via Careiro by road and then by boat through lakes, narrow channels and floating vegetation. Lunch is served after arrival.

In the afternoon, make a first canoe excursion to become familiar with the surrounding lakes and forest margins. Birds, monkeys, sloths, iguanas and caimans may be seen, although wildlife sightings vary naturally.

Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Day 2

Sunrise, rainforest walk and evening excursion

Begin early with a sunrise outing and birdwatching.

After breakfast, take a guided rainforest walk. The guide explains forest layers, ecological relationships and traditional uses of plants as materials, food and household remedies. The emphasis is on knowledge and observation, not on surviving without carried food or equipment.

After lunch, explore by paddle canoe. After dinner, conditions permitting, go out with a spotlight to look for caimans, night birds and other nocturnal wildlife.

Day 3

Riverside community and fishing

After breakfast, visit a riverside community when arranged with the host family. The guide explains how manioc is cultivated and processed and how rubber trees are tapped for latex without being felled.

The visit offers insight into everyday riverside life rather than a staged performance.

After lunch, go fishing in lakes or quieter river sections. Piranhas and other freshwater fish occur in the area, but a catch can never be guaranteed.

Day 4

Traditional plant knowledge, rubber history and free time

Spend the morning on another walk in a different forest area. The guide discusses plants traditionally used by local communities and knowledge passed between generations; this is cultural and natural-history information, not medical advice.

Learn more about the rubber boom, seringueira trees and the production of natural rubber from latex.

After lunch, rest or take a short activity such as paddling, fishing or observation near the lodge, depending on weather and water level.

Day 5

River dolphins, flooded forest and return to Manaus

After breakfast, take a final canoe outing through small channels, lakes and, when water levels allow, flooded forest. The focus is on birds, landscape and the area’s pink and grey river dolphins.

After lunch, return to Manaus for drop-off at your hotel or the airport.
