Birdwatching at Amazon Turtle Lodge – 4 days

A concentrated specialist programme in forest, lakes and igarapés

4 days / 3 nights Moderate Specialist birdwatching

This programme is for travellers who want birds to set the pace and to explore the Amazon slowly, listening as carefully as they look.

The Mamori and Juma area contains several distinct habitats: terra firme forest, lake margins, igarapés and seasonally flooded forest. Together they offer opportunities for both forest species and birds associated with open water.

The four-day version is a focused introduction with two full observation days.

Day by day

Day 1

Manaus, the Meeting of the Waters and first birding excursion

Leave your Manaus hotel in the morning and travel via the CEASA port and the Meeting of the Waters. The journey south combines speedboat, road transfer and a final boat ride through lakes and narrow channels to Amazon Turtle Lodge.

After lunch, meet the bird guide and make a first orientation outing by motorised canoe. The guide chooses the area according to current water levels, fruiting trees and recent bird activity.

Dinner is followed by a briefing for the next morning’s early start.

Day 2

Sunrise, forest birds and open wetlands

Set out on the water at about 05:30. The first hours of daylight are particularly useful for hearing and locating species before the forest soundscape becomes more complex.

After breakfast, walk in terra firme forest with attention to species that are less likely to appear in open habitats. The pace is slow and observations determine the route.

In the afternoon, search for birds around lakes and river margins. Kingfishers, herons, raptors and colourful passerines may be seen, although the species mix varies naturally with season and local conditions.

After dinner, take an evening outing focused on night birds and other nocturnal wildlife.

Day 3

A different morning habitat and riverside life

Begin in a different area to increase the variety of habitats and possible species.

After breakfast, explore a trail close to the lodge. The guide helps with calls, behaviour and ecological relationships rather than simply working through a checklist.

In the afternoon, a visit to a riverside family may be included. Manioc, fruit and rubber cultivation create different habitats from closed forest and can also produce interesting bird observations.

Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Day 4

Morning on the water and return to Manaus

After breakfast, make a final quiet canoe trip through narrow channels and, when water levels allow, flooded forest. Pink and grey river dolphins may also be encountered.

After lunch, leave Amazon Turtle Lodge and return to Manaus, with drop-off at the hotel or airport late in the afternoon.

Species occurrence and accessibility vary with season, water level, weather and fruiting cycles. The programme describes habitats and approach, not a guaranteed species list.
