The Rio Negro route is the strongest short cruise for travellers who primarily want blackwater forest, Anavilhanas and the Amazon’s maze of islands and channels.

For four days, the vessel travels upstream from Manaus through dark, nutrient-poor water with mirror-like surfaces and seasonally flooded igapó forest. Small canoes reach narrow channels inaccessible to the main vessel.

The programme combines early bird outings, walking, swimming, fishing and visits with families along the river. On the final morning, the route returns via Lago Janauari and Encontro das Águas to Manaus.

You stay aboard Amazon Clipper Traditional, aboard the smaller Amazon Clipper Traditional with simple, practical comfort.

Day by day

Day 1

Manaus, the Rio Negro and a night canoe excursion

Meet at the designated point in Manaus at around 14:00. After embarkation, welcome and briefing, the boat leaves the city and heads upstream on the Rio Negro.

During the afternoon, the guides introduce Amazon nature and the distinctive ecology of blackwater systems. Dinner is served on board.

In the evening, head out in small canoes and listen to how the forest changes after dark. The guide searches for night birds, frogs, snakes and caimans along the water.

Day 2

Birdlife, forest walk and Anavilhanas

The day begins with a canoe excursion along the riverbank, where parrots, toucans and other fruit-eating birds are often active in the morning light.

After breakfast, take a guided forest walk. The guide explains how plants and animals have adapted to rainforest humidity, nutrient-poor soils and changing water levels.

After lunch and, conditions permitting, a swim, the vessel continues through Anavilhanas National Park. Later, return to the canoes to explore part of the archipelago’s network of islands, channels and flooded forest.

Nature fishing, a riverside community and white sand

Early in the morning, there may be an opportunity to try piranha or nature fishing. After breakfast, visit a riverside community and see cultivation of regional fruits and palms.

The guiding covers manioc-flour production and how distance, rivers and seasons influence income, schooling and access to health services.

After lunch, the vessel may stop at a white-sand beach for swimming when water level and weather permit. The day ends with a canoe excursion and a search for wildlife in the evening light.

During breakfast, the vessel heads towards Encontro das Águas, where the Rio Negro and Solimões/Amazon meet in a striking contrast between dark and light water.

The cruise finishes in Manaus at around 11:30.

MV Amazon Clipper – Traditional

Amazon Clipper Traditional is a regional riverboat built for expedition cruising in the Amazon. It carries a maximum of 16 guests in eight air-conditioned cabins.

Cabins are approximately 6–9 m² with bunk beds and a private bathroom with shower. The standard is simple and functional rather than hotel-like.

The boat has three decks, a covered dining room with bar and an open sun deck with unobstructed views. Its smaller size creates a personal atmosphere, but also means less private and communal space than on Premium.

Good to know

The cruises operate on scheduled departures and are shared with other guests. Exact departure days and the vessel used must be confirmed before booking.

The meeting point is normally Tropical Executive Hotel in Manaus at approximately 14:00, with return at approximately 11:30. Time and place can change and should always be checked against the current booking confirmation.

The route and order of activities may change according to water level, weather, safety and local natural conditions. The captain and expedition team decide the practical operation of the programme.

Excursions use small motorised canoes and forest trails. Wildlife moves freely and sightings of any particular species can never be guaranteed.

The programme can be booked on its own or combined with flights, a Manaus hotel and other parts of a tailor-made journey. Exact inclusions and price are set out in SambaTravel’s proposal.

Traditional is the operator’s smaller and simpler category. Cabins have bunk beds and limited floor space.

The cruise may operate on another vessel within the same confirmed category if the operator needs to make an operational change.
