Mendoza
Read more about Mendoza Show less
Mendoza has grown around the contrast between dry ground and green oasis. Inside the city, avenues and parks create shade. A few kilometres away the vineyards begin, and behind them the Andes rise on an ever larger scale.
The wine experience changes between regions. Maipú tells the story of older production and olive oil. Luján de Cuyo offers Malbec, classic bodegas and proximity to the city. The Uco Valley opens into a broader landscape of high-altitude vineyards with mountains accompanying every meal.
The city also deserves time. Its plazas, Parque General San Martín, markets and restaurants show how Mendoza works beyond winery gates. During Vendimia, the entire province becomes a stage for harvest, music and regional pride.
A good stay alternates tasting, food and nature. Two wineries with a long lunch give more than a rushed schedule, and the mountain day needs room for the distances involved. At the right pace, Mendoza becomes as much a landscape as a wine destination.

Planning a trip to Mendoza?
We help you combine the right hotels, transport and experiences into a well-planned journey.
Maipú and Mendoza’s older wine landscape
Maipú lies south-east of the city and has several historic bodegas, olive-oil producers and wine museums. The area shows how Mendoza developed from local wine production into a modern export region.

Distances between some producers can be manageable by bicycle, but heat, traffic and wine tasting require sensible planning. Private transport provides greater flexibility and safety.
A day in Maipú suits travellers who value history and smaller producers more than the most dramatic mountain views. Olive oil and local lunches add useful variety to the tastings.
Luján de Cuyo – a classic region for Malbec
Luján de Cuyo lies south of Mendoza and is strongly associated with Malbec. Vineyards spread between small towns, irrigation channels and the dry foothills of the Andes.
The region has both older bodegas and striking modern architecture. Visits can therefore range from traditional cellars to gravity-fed wineries and small premium projects.
A good day includes no more than two or three bodegas and a longer lunch. That leaves time to understand the winemaking and keeps the flavours distinct.
Combine Mendoza with
The Uco Valley, altitude and the great mountain views
The Uco Valley includes Tunuyán, Tupungato and San Carlos and lies around an hour or more south of Mendoza. Vineyards are often higher and closer to the dramatic silhouette of the Andes.

Altitude, intense sunlight and cool nights contribute to fresh acidity and slower ripening. Malbec remains important, but Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay and several other grapes have given the valley a broader identity.
The region deserves a full day and ideally an overnight stay. Distances are greater, but lunches and accommodation among the vineyards make the Uco Valley a destination in its own right.
Winery architecture and lunch as the main event
Mendoza has become an international centre for modern winery architecture. Buildings use stone, concrete, timber and long sightlines towards the mountains.
The architecture is not purely visual. It can use gravity during production, stable underground temperatures and natural light in visitor spaces.
Many bodegas have restaurants where several courses are served with wines from the estate. The meal then becomes the clearest link between soil, grape, kitchen and landscape.
Journeys including Mendoza
Mendoza city and the irrigated oasis
Central Mendoza was redesigned after the 1861 earthquake with broad streets and several open squares. The plan provided both evacuation space and a more spacious city.

Acequias run along the pavements and carry meltwater to trees and parks. They are fundamental to the oasis and also a detail pedestrians need to notice.
Parque General San Martín is the city’s great green space, with avenues, a lake and sports facilities. From Cerro de la Gloria there are views across the city and the dry mountains around it.
Vendimia, empanadas and cooking over fire
Vendimia celebrates the grape harvest through local festivities, parades, music and a major stage production. The festival expresses the identity of the whole province, not merely the marketing of the wine industry.
Empanadas mendocinas are often filled with beef, onion and spices. Meat cooked over open fire, vegetables from the oasis and olive oil recur throughout the region’s menus.
Mendoza has developed an ambitious restaurant culture around regional ingredients and wine. There is every reason to plan dinners as carefully as winery visits.

Aconcagua and the road towards Chile
The road from Mendoza towards the Andes follows valleys and historic transport routes in the direction of Chile. Uspallata provides the first great opening, and farther up lie Puente del Inca and viewpoints towards Aconcagua.

Aconcagua Provincial Park has short walks as well as long expedition routes. A normal day excursion provides views and an introduction without approaching the demands of mountaineering.
Altitude, wind and temperature change quickly. A mountain day requires warm layers and realistic expectations even when Mendoza city is experiencing summer heat.
Horse riding, hiking and rivers from the Andes
Mendoza offers horse riding through vineyards, dry foothills and higher valleys. Programmes range from short rides to longer days with asado.
Rafting and kayaking take place on rivers fed by the Andes, while hikes explore ravines and nature reserves. Seasons and difficulty depend on water levels and weather.
These activities work best as a contrast to winery visits. A physically active day in the mountains followed by a relaxed wine lunch creates a better balance than several consecutive days of tastings.

That can mean good-value mid-range hotels or more distinctive properties where the accommodation becomes part of the experience.
