Mar del Plata
Read more about Mar del Plata Show less
Mar del Plata is a large Argentine city that happens to stand beside the sea. In January the beaches, theatres and restaurants fill up, but the harbour, universities, museums and residential districts continue far beyond the holiday season.
The coast contains several bathing environments. Bristol is historic and central, Varese more sheltered, Playa Grande shaped by surfing and Punta Mogotes broader and more organised. Choosing a beach changes the character of the whole day.
The harbour gives the city weight. Here you see the work of the fishing industry, the ingredients used by restaurants and the large sea-lion colony. The contrast with the Rambla makes Mar del Plata much more interesting than a conventional resort.
When beach, harbour, architecture and culture are given their own time, the city emerges both as a summer destination and as a substantial coastal city during the rest of the year.

We help you combine the right hotels, transport and experiences into a well-planned journey.
Bristol, the Rambla and the classic resort
Playa Bristol lies directly in front of Mar del Plata’s monumental centre. The Rambla, two sea-lion statues, Casino Central and the former Hotel Provincial create the city’s most recognisable setting.

The architecture reflects the ambition of the 1930s and 1940s to make Mar del Plata a national holiday city. The large stone façades and open seafront still function as the city’s public stage.
The beach becomes extremely crowded in high summer. An early walk, or a visit in spring or autumn, reveals the setting more clearly than the busiest January days.
Varese, Playa Grande and Punta Mogotes
Varese lies in a more sheltered bay and often feels calmer than the more exposed beaches. Playa Grande is associated with surfing, beach clubs and restaurants close to the southern side of the centre.
Punta Mogotes lies farther south and consists of several broad beaches with organised bathing facilities. It suits longer beach days but requires more transport.
Waves, wind and currents vary between parts of the coast. Local beach flags and lifeguard advice should always determine where and when to swim.
Combine Mar del Plata with
The fishing port and the sea lions
The harbour is a working area for the fishing fleet, shipyards and industry and gives Mar del Plata an identity far beyond tourism. Colourful smaller boats lie beside much larger vessels.

South American sea lions gather close to the port and can often be seen from land. They should be watched from a respectful distance and never fed or crowded.
A walk through the area combines naturally with lunch. Smells, sounds and heavy traffic make the experience more raw and everyday than the central promenade.
Fish, seafood and the flavours of the beach city
Harbour restaurants serve hake, calamari, anchovies, octopus and shellfish. The day’s catch and how it is cooked matter more than a very long menu.
Churros are sold along the beaches and often filled with dulce de leche. Alfajores and artisan ice cream are also strongly associated with the city’s holiday culture.
A simple fish lunch in the port and dinner in the centre or Güemes district reveal two different sides of Mar del Plata’s restaurant scene.
The film festival, theatres and Museo MAR
Festival Internacional de Cine de Mar del Plata has brought Argentine and international cinema together since 1954. Programme and dates change each year, but the festival remains a central part of the city’s cultural identity.

The summer season fills theatres with comedy, music and touring national productions. During the rest of the year, several venues and cultural centres serve a more local audience.
Museo MAR presents modern and contemporary art in a large building near the northern coast. The combination of film, theatre and visual art makes the city relevant even on days when the sea is less inviting.
Chalets, Villa Victoria and the city’s architecture
Mar del Plata has many villas and chalets from the first half of the twentieth century. Local stone, timber, brick and steep roofs created a style strongly associated with the city.
Villa Victoria was the summer home of writer and cultural figure Victoria Ocampo. Today it is a cultural centre and tells the story of Argentina’s literary networks.
A walk through Stella Maris and Los Troncos shows how villas from the older resort city meet apartment blocks and today’s large coastal metropolis.

Sierra and Laguna de los Padres
Sierra de los Padres lies inland among low hills, gardens, restaurants and small-scale cultivation. The area creates a green contrast to the Atlantic coast.

Laguna de los Padres offers birdlife, walks and historic sites. The landscape is more open and peaceful than the city and suits a half- or full-day excursion.
The trip requires a car or arranged transport and should be chosen according to the weather. It is especially worthwhile during longer stays when coast and inland are to be combined.
Summer intensity, low season and the right number of nights
January and the first part of February are the main high season, with dense traffic, crowded beaches and a large entertainment programme. Reservations and hotel location become especially important.
Spring and early autumn bring milder city life, less congestion and a continuing cultural and restaurant scene. The sea is cooler and the weather more variable.
Three or four nights give a good first stay. Mar del Plata combines most naturally with Buenos Aires and the Pampas, while longer coastal journeys involve greater distances and need their own planning.

In some places a central hotel is best; elsewhere quiet surroundings, views or character matter more. We therefore suggest options that fit the way the journey is planned.
That can mean good-value mid-range hotels or more distinctive properties where the accommodation becomes part of the experience.
