Colonial architecture in Cartagena, Colombia
COLOMBIA

Cartagena

Cartagena wears its history openly.

Inside the walls, narrow streets run between colourful houses and shaded courtyards.

As the heat eases, the streets and squares fill and the city settles into a different pace.

Cartagena is still enclosed by the walls that once protected its port and wealth. Inside them, narrow streets run between colourful houses, balconies and shaded courtyards.

Getsemaní has a looser character, with painted façades and a more everyday street life. As the heat of the day eases, the city changes and its squares fill with movement.

Cartagena is best experienced slowly and on foot.

Cartagena is still defined by the massive wall surrounding its old city. Inside, narrow streets run between houses whose balconies are covered with bougainvillea, while thick stone walls provide shade from the strongest heat.

In Getsemaní, the atmosphere is less formal. Murals cover the walls and much of daily life takes place outside. The Caribbean is present in the air and in the late-afternoon light across the squares. The city is best explored on foot once the temperature begins to fall.

Amazon River and rainforest in Brazil
BRAZIL

The Amazon

In the Amazon, much of the journey takes place along the rivers.

The boat becomes the road through a landscape where forest closes around the water.

Only after a few days do the details begin to emerge and the wider landscape make sense.

In the Amazon, rivers are the roads through the landscape. From a boat, you move between dense vegetation, flooded forest and smaller tributaries where sounds often reveal wildlife before you see it.

Mist hangs low over the water in the morning. After a few days, the eye begins to pick out movement in the forest, birds in the canopy and subtle changes in the river.

It is a journey that rewards attention.

In the Amazon, movement happens along the rivers. Boats pass through dense vegetation where the canopy closes around the water. In the morning, mist hangs low and the calls of birds and monkeys fill the air.

As the day develops, movement becomes visible: something shifts in the branches, a bird lifts away, the surface of the water breaks. The pace is set by the surroundings, and the larger picture emerges gradually. After a few days, details that initially disappeared into the abundance begin to stand out.

Rainforest, volcanoes and coast in Costa Rica
COSTA RICA

Costa Rica

Costa Rica offers remarkable variety over relatively short distances.

Rainforest, volcanoes and coast follow one another without the journey being dominated by long transfers.

That makes the country one of the most accessible in the region.

Costa Rica offers unusual variety over relatively short distances. Volcanic regions, rainforest and coast can be combined without long transfers dominating the journey.

Sloths, monkeys and colourful birds are often close at hand in the forest, while days on the coast move at a freer pace. The contrast between the environments makes the country particularly rewarding to explore as a journey rather than a single stay.

Costa Rica moves quickly between very different landscapes. Volcanic regions give way to dense forest, which in turn opens towards the coast. Distances are relatively short, but the contrasts are clear.

In the forest, trails pass through habitats where wildlife is close. Sloths, monkeys and birds are often first noticed through movement and sound. At the coast, the pace changes again. It is the contrast between these environments that gives a journey through Costa Rica its shape.

Machu Picchu and the Inca civilisation in Peru
PERU

Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu occupies a dramatic position between mountains and cloud forest.

The city displays a level of construction that remains impressive centuries later.

It is a place where history and landscape cannot be separated.

Machu Picchu stands on a narrow ridge where the Andes meet greener cloud forest. Terraces follow the slopes and the stone buildings show a precision that still impresses.

Only on site does the relationship between city and landscape become fully clear: the steep mountains, the river far below and the exact positioning of the buildings.

Machu Picchu is as much geography as architecture.

Machu Picchu stands on a narrow mountain ridge where the Andes meet denser forest. Terraces follow the slopes and remain intact after centuries. In the central areas, stones fit together without mortar with a precision that has helped the structures withstand a demanding climate.

The journey arrives by train through the Sacred Valley or on foot along historic Inca routes. At the citadel, the landscape opens in every direction, with steep green mountains and the Urubamba River far below. The setting makes clear both why the site was chosen and how skilfully the Inca worked with the terrain.

Sea lions and wildlife in the Galápagos Islands, Ecuador
ECUADOR

Galápagos Islands

In the Galápagos, many animals show remarkably little fear of people.

This makes wildlife encounters unusually direct and close.

Each island has its own character, and the experience changes as you move between them.

Wildlife encounters in the Galápagos are unusually direct. Sea lions rest on beaches, marine iguanas lie across lava fields and birds nest openly with little concern for the people nearby.

The islands differ markedly from one another, from stark volcanic landscapes and clear water to greener highlands. The combination of geology and wildlife is what makes the journey so distinctive.

In the Galápagos, many animals show remarkably little fear of people. Sea lions rest on beaches, birds nest openly and marine iguanas lie across dark lava fields. Distances between islands may be small, but the variation is considerable.

The landscape can be stark: black rock meets clear water, while greener zones appear higher up as the climate changes. Each island has its own character, and the relationship between wildlife and geology brings coherence to the archipelago as a whole.

SambaTravel tailor-made journeys to Latin America
JOURNEYS TO LATIN AMERICA

SambaTravel

From the Galápagos and the Andes to the Amazon and the Pantanal, Latin America encompasses remarkable wildlife, cultures and landscapes.

Since 2003, we have created tailor-made journeys with carefully chosen routes, accommodation and experiences.

You travel at your own pace, following an itinerary shaped around your interests.

The Pantanal, the Galápagos, the Andes, Atacama and the Amazon are destinations where season, distance, transport and the choice of accommodation shape the entire experience.

Since 2003, we have created tailor-made journeys in Latin America based on first-hand regional knowledge and carefully selected local partners. We know which combinations work, when to slow the pace and which experiences are worth building a route around.

Your itinerary is built around your interests rather than a standard package.

Latin America contains some of the world's most distinctive destinations: the wetlands of the Pantanal, the volcanic Galápagos Islands, the high Andes, the vast landscapes of Patagonia and the forests of the Amazon. A good journey, however, is not created by simply adding one sight after another. Season, route, accommodation, guiding and pace need to work together.

Since 2003, we have created tailor-made journeys in Latin America for travellers who want more than a standard itinerary. Drawing on our experience of the region and carefully chosen local partners, we build each journey with a clear purpose behind every element.

The result is an itinerary shaped around your interests, your time and the way you want to experience Latin America.

Rio Carnival samba parade at the Sambadrome
BRAZIL

Rio Carnival

Rio Carnival may feel spontaneous, but it is the result of a full year of work.

The samba schools spend months preparing for their passage through the Sambadrome, where music, movement, costumes and staging must work with extraordinary precision.

From the right section of the stadium, the scale and structure of the parade become clear.

Rio Carnival is one of the world's most elaborate parades, with a purpose behind every detail.

From the right section of the Sambadrome, you see not only individual costumes and floats but the complete procession as thousands of performers move through the arena.

Beyond the stadium, street parties, beaches and neighbourhood celebrations keep Rio alive deep into the night.

In the Sambadrome, thousands of performers move through the night in choreography far more precise than it first appears. Drums, song, costumes, elaborate floats and dance combine in a spectacle whose full scale only becomes apparent inside the arena.

The celebrations extend far beyond the Sambadrome. Street parties around Copacabana and Ipanema, the steep bohemian streets of Santa Teresa and the older quarters of the city centre reveal very different sides of Rio. During Carnival, performance, everyday life and celebration occupy the same streets.

Jaguar safari and wildlife in the Pantanal, Brazil
BRAZIL

Pantanal

The Pantanal is an open wetland where wildlife is often easy to observe.

It offers some of South America's best opportunities to see jaguars in the wild, usually from small boats on the rivers.

Water levels, light and animal movements shape each day.

The Pantanal opens out along rivers, grasslands and low forest. The chances of seeing jaguars in the wild are better here than anywhere else in South America.

From small boats, you search the riverbanks while caimans, capybaras and abundant birdlife are seldom far away.

It is one of the continent's great wildlife regions.

The Pantanal opens out along rivers and savannah-like wetlands. The conditions for seeing jaguars in the wild are better here than anywhere else on the continent. From small boats, you follow riverbanks where the cats move between forest and water, sometimes at surprisingly close range.

The birdlife is prolific. Toucans, hyacinth macaws and jabiru storks cross the open landscape, while caimans gather at the water's edge and capybaras graze among the vegetation.

Buenos Aires city and architecture in Argentina
ARGENTINA

Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires is a city to experience rather than simply tour.

Days unfold among cafés, parks and neighbourhoods where history remains visible in the architecture. In the evening, people gather over food and conversations continue late.

It is a city that rewards time and attention.

Buenos Aires was built with European ambitions but has an unmistakably Argentine rhythm. Broad avenues, parks and stone façades give the city its character.

Days pass among bookshops, historic cafés and neighbourhoods with strong identities. In the evening, attention shifts to parrillas and long dinners.

The more of the city you explore, the more rewarding it becomes.

Buenos Aires was built with ambition. Its broad avenues, stone façades and early twentieth-century parks still shape the way people move through the city.

During the day, you can wander between bookshops in former theatres and historic cafés whose interiors have barely changed. In the evening, people gather at neighbourhood parrillas. Dinner stretches on, and conversation with it. Tango is present too, often more as an undercurrent than a performance.

Torres del Paine mountains and glaciers in Patagonia
CHILE

Patagonia

In Patagonia, the scale of the landscape is immediately apparent.

Mountains, glaciers and open spaces reveal new perspectives as you travel through the region.

The journeys between places are part of the experience.

In Torres del Paine, granite towers rise almost vertically above lakes, glaciers and open valleys. The landscape is grand but constantly changing as wind, light and weather shift through the day.

On foot and by boat, you come close to the scale of the landscape, from calving ice to views that open across entire valleys.

Here, the landscape itself is the main event.

Torres del Paine is dominated by steep granite towers rising directly from the landscape. Below them, glaciers and lakes spread out in sharp shades of blue. Wind moves constantly through the region, changing the light and making each day different.

From a boat, you can watch ice calve into the water. On foot, trails climb towards viewpoints overlooking entire valleys, where the human presence appears very small. Travelling through Patagonia continually reveals the scale of the region from a new angle.
