Pousada och Fazenda Aguape har ägts av samma familj i 150 år som sedan 1989 varit pionjärer i området på ekologiskt turism. Lodgen ligger i naturskönt område i södra Pantanal omgiven av sjöar, slättland och tropisk skog vid floden Aquidauana.

Lodgen stödjer ett viktigt projekt som syftar till att bevara och skydda världens största papegoja, Hyacintaran som är vanlig i detta område.

Horse Riding Tour

All tours are conducted by the unique landscapes, but the horse is one of the main attractions of the Aguapé Lodge, it is the best way to explore the wetlands.
Riding through its open fields, marshes, caápões, ridges, streams and bays, we encounter a rich variety of lush flora and fauna, typical of a region well preserved. The horses are calm, which means that even those who have never ridden a horse can do this tour. There are several tracks with shorter or longer routes, which can be made in both the floods and dry seasons, always with experienced local guides.

 

Cattle Handling

During the morning or afternoon, you can accompany the cowboys in their work routine with the cattle. Move the cattle to other parts of the farm (cattle drive), take care of the calves or see the cowboys working at the corral. It is also a good opportunity to learn a little bit more about the culture and habits of the people from Pantanal.

 

Boat Tour in the Aquiadauana River

This is the best way to get to know the Aquidauana River and the beauty and exuberance of its gallery forest. It is the natural habitat of birds, mammals and reptiles that lie out on river banks or simply hear the songs of the birds.

 

Trekking

Trekking is done in dense bush, open fields and gallery forest. It’s in this tour that you will have a better contact with the flora and fauna of the region learning about their function and importance in Pantanal ecosystem. It is a good opportunity to see the animals more closely.

 

Photographic Safari

The photo safari is done in a 4x4 open vehicle. This tour gives you the opportunity to cover more territory of the farm going through different landscapes like cerrado (patches of stunted vegetation), open grasslands, “vazantes” (low-lying areas that are often seasonally flooded),
“brejos” (swamps) and bays which are permanently flooded areas. It is also a perfect tour to see and observe the wild life of the Pantanal.

 

Nocturnal Animal Spotting

This is an activity that is done at night in a 4X4 vehicle or in a boat, to observe the night animals like anteaters, foxes, capybaras and caimans. Also to hear the sounds of frogs and insects at night and to see the beautiful sky of the Pantanal.

 

Piranha Fishing

The piranha fishing is made in a bay of Aquidauana River, that it is located near the lodge. The piranha is mainly used to prepare a typical dish of the region, piranha soup. It is also good way to see the caimans who watch the fishers to steal their piranhas.

 

Horse Carriage Tour

A pleasant tour through the fields of the farm and also a good option for those who don’t like or cannot ride on horseback. With the horse carriage it’s possible to do the same route of the horseback tour giving the access to different trails even during the rainy season. In addition to the comfort of the horse carriage, the silence is an advantage of this kind of tour.
Duration of the tour is around 1h30 to 3 hours, depending on the track used.

 

 

Information

The Aguape Lodge has 15 guest rooms with air-conditioning, ceiling fans, minibar, and private bathroom with hot water – electrical shower (some rooms are already equipped with solar water heater).

The rooms are for 01 to 04 people and one room is handicap-accessible.

Environmental projects

The Fazenda and Lodge takes part in a number of projects aiming to preserve the precious nature in the southern Pantanal.

 

PANTANAL NATURE PARK

The idea of creating a Pantanal Nature Park, following the experience of nature parks in France, dates back to the beginning of the eighties. In 1998 the Pantanal Nature Park was created and its aims were to support the introduction of a new protection policy for sustainable development of the Pantanal. It was also to show that this development model could be used in other areas of Brazil.

The project was introduced in MatoGrosso do Sul and covers an area of 6.000.000 hectares taking in the cities of Aquidauana, Corumbá, Rio Verde, Rio Negro, and Corguinho. The Pousada Aguapé (Fazenda São José) has taken part in the project since the year 2000.

 

HYACINTHMACAW PROJECT

Fazenda Sao José, where Pousada Aguape is located has been taken part in this project since May,2000. The project’s aim is to preserve the environment to ensure the survival of Anodorhynchushyacinthinus in its natural habitat.

The Hyacinth Preservation Project in the South of MatoGrosso do Sul, dates back to 1990 carried out by Neiva Maria RobaloGuedes, a well known biologist. Its aims are to develop research about macaw’s behavior, reproduction process, habitat requirements and management in order to improve the knowledge about the survival of the species in nature.

PANTANEIRO HORSE

In 1535 during the time that the Spanish ruled over this region, Pedro de Mendonça brought the first horses to this area, which was bloodstock from the Iberian Peninsula. In this same year, the Guaicuru Indians attacked him taking most of these horses. From this and many other attacks, the Indians took possession of many animals of the same origin.

Thereafter the Guaicurus Indians started to breed and to spread this race of horse in the Pantanal area. Later, through the settlers arriving from other states, the cross-breeding of these animals with the resident’s horses and natural selection continued for the three following centuries. In this way, the Pantaneiro Horse appeared. It is an animal endowed with extraordinary toughness, an enormous hoof resistance to wetlands, as well as, the ability for hard and continuous work in the extensive wetlands of the Pantanal.

In the seventies these animals almost faced extinction due to spread of a disease called infectious anemia in the Pantanal. In 1972, Ministry of Agriculture introduced in Poconé – a town in the state of MatoGrosso, the Pantaneiro Horse Project. This was a central nucleus focused on breeding and preserving this animal.

Later, in 1982, the MatoGrosso do Sul University (UFMS) introduced a similar project in order to do research and to supply good reproductive stock to create new breeding nuclei. Fazenda São José (farm), where Pousada Aguapé is located, has taken part in this project since the beginning of year 2000 to 2008.

 

ANTEATER PROJECT

This project was created by professionals that work with wild animals and with experience on anteaters, with the intention of collect all the available information about the species of the family Myrmecophagidae, “in situ” and “ex situ”, to develop an action plan for conservation of the specie and to integrate with other organizations that have the same focus on preservation. In order to do that, some projects are being developed and one of this projects to conservation of the Giant Anteater (Myrmecophagatridactyla) it´s based at Pousada Aguapé.

 

ORGANICVEAL IN PANTANAL

This is a pioneering project of Pantanal Park Institute that is about breeding male and female calves mainly in natural pasture. The animals are weaned between the ages of seven to twelve months weighing 180 kilos.

This process gives the veal a special organic flavor. It is a meat produced in perfect harmony with the Pantanal environment, free from toxic and chemical residues, and his low calorific value and low fat content. Its management in the stages of production, slaughter, deboning and packing leads to an international certificate as an ecologically correct organic product.
